On September 4, 2013, in the Central Library Book Club room, between noon and 1pm, we met and discussed various roots that you can eat. Fresh jicama, water chestnuts, yams, sweet potatoes, cassava, were brought it to help one learn how to identify these edible roots. Besides knowing that potatoes and carrots are common root vegetables, we tried rutabaga, turnips, yucca, celeriac, and Jerusalem artichokes. All were crunchy and delicious! It was a good lesson to learn about the different features of root crops and how they can be prepared to add a new food to your repertoire. Several attending this book club were seeing jicama for the first time and learning that it can add a nice crunch to your meal.
